Identification of edge effects in the examination of rectangular components using ultrasonic pulse-echo methods

The master's thesis is part of the research project "Recycled stone - Characterization of lightweight concrete blocks made from recycled material using non-destructive testing methods". This master's thesis is specifically concerned with using the PD8050 ultrasonic array echo device from Proceq Screening Eagle to carry out investigations on cuboid components. Cuboids made of three different materials are available: Polyamide 6, normal concrete of strength class C 20/25 and lightweight concrete with porous structure of bulk density class 2.0 kg/dm3. Geometrically determined edge effects result from the 8-DF format of the blocks, as the ultrasonic waves reach the edges of the blocks and are reflected. The edge effects are detected and described in this work from the raw data of the ultrasonic examinations.

They are also used to create AI models with the help of the Echolyst AI software. This is trained to recognize the position of the measuring device during the measurement. As the boundary effects are sufficient features, this project is successful for some training models. As a result, it can be said that edge effects occur, but they are more difficult to recognize with decreasing inhomogeneity of the material and AI training models for determining the position of the array device are also more difficult to train.
