„Micromorphic Models and Effective Interface Forces for Finite-Sized Mechanical Metamaterials Modeling“

Prof. Dr. Angela Madeo (Technische Universität Dortmund) has been invited to give a scientific lecture at the upcoming session of the Klasse für Ingenieur- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste on 11 March 2026, at 3:30 PM.

In her talk, titled “Micromorphic Models and Effective Interface Forces for Finite-Sized Mechanical Metamaterials Modeling”, Prof. Madeo will discuss modern challenges and advances in the theoretical modeling of mechanical metamaterials. Metamaterials, architectured materials with engineered microstructures, exhibit extraordinary static and dynamic behavior, such as negative Poisson’s ratio, band-gaps, and anomalous wave propagation, that go beyond classical material responses.

While homogenization techniques allow reliable modeling of infinite-size metamaterials, they are not suitable for finite-size structures, which limits their use in practical engineering and wave-control applications. In this lecture, Prof. Madeo will explain how generalized continuum theories, especially micromorphic models, can effectively describe homogenized responses, even in finite configurations. She will further introduce the crucial concepts of non-coherent interfaces and microstructure-driven interface forces, showing their importance for accurate, macro-scale modeling of finite-sized mechanical metamaterials.

The lecture will provide illustrative numerical examples comparing micromorphic simulations with fully microstructured models, offering new insight into upscaling strategies for metamaterial structures: https://www.awk.nrw/termine/veranstaltungen-fuer-mitglieder/micromorphic-models-and-effective-interface-forces-for-finite-sized-mechanical-metamaterials-modeling
